وَأَجنيand I do wrong عَلىagainst قَوميmy people وَأَحمِلand I bear the burden عَنهُمon their behalf
وَأَجني عَلى قَومي وَأَحمِل عَنهُم
وَسَيّدand the chief قَومof a people مَنone who جَنىdoes wrong وَتَحَمّلاand shoulders the burden
وَسَيّد قَوم مَن جَنى وَتَحَمّلا
And I wrong my people, and bear their burdens;
I bear others' burdens though faultless,
And a people's chief is one who does wrong and shoulders the burden.
The leader of a people is one who bears much.
وَإِنand if أَجنِI do wrong لاnot أَحمِلI lay عَلَيهِمupon them جَريرَتيmy guilt
وَإِن أَجنِ لا أَحمِل عَلَيهِم جَريرَتي
وَلكِنَّنيbut I إِمّاif جَنَواthey do wrong كُنتُI would be مَؤئِلاa refuge
وَلكِنَّني إِمّا جَنَوا كُنتُ مَؤئِلا
And if I do wrong, I do not lay my guilt upon them;
If I bear no others' sins upon my shoulders,
But should they do wrong, I would be their refuge.
Then I protect only my own interests.
