إِذاwhen السنةthe year الشَّهباءashen; drought-stricken مَدّتspread out سَماءَهاits sky
إِذا السنة الشَّهباء مَدّت سَماءَها
مَدَدتَyou spread out سَماءًa sky دونهاbeneath it فَتَجَلّتso it cleared away
مَدَدتَ سَماءً دونها فَتَجَلّت
When the ashen year of drought spreads out its sky,
When the starry sky stretched out its horizon
You spread a sky beneath it, and the drought is dispelled.
You stretched a sky below it, so it appeared
وَعادَتand became بِكَthrough you الرِّيحthe wind العَقيمُbarren لَدىat the time of القِرىhospitality to guests
وَعادَت بِكَ الرِّيح العَقيمُ لَدى القِرى
لِقاحاًfertile; rain-bearing فَدرّتso it poured abundantly عَنfrom نداكyour bounty; your dew وَطَلّتand shed gentle rain
لِقاحاً فَدرّت عَن نداك وَطَلّت
And through you, when guests are welcomed, the barren wind becomes
The barren winds have come back to the villages with you
Rain-bearing, then pours from your bounty and sheds gentle rain.
Ripened by your rains, they came seeking more
