أَخa brother بَينيbetween me وَبَينand between الدَّهTime (word fragment)
أَخ بَيني وَبَين الدَّه
رِcompletion of 'Time' صاحِبُcompanion of أَيّناwhichever of us غَلباprevailed
رِ صاحِبُ أَيّنا غَلبا
A brother, between me and Time,
is the companion of whichever of us prevails.
صَديقيmy friend ماas long as اِستَقامremained steady فَإِنbut if
صَديقي ما اِستَقام فَإِن
نَباturned hostile دَهرٌTime عَلَيّagainst me نَباhe turned away
نَبا دَهرٌ عَلَيّ نَبا
My friend while Time runs smoothly; but if
Time turns against me, he turns away.
وَثبتُI sprang عَلىupon الزَّمانِTime بِهِwith his aid
وَثبتُ عَلى الزَّمانِ بِهِ
فَعادَthen it returned بِهِthrough him وَقَدand already وَثَباhad sprung
فَعادَ بِهِ وَقَد وَثَبا
I sprang upon Time with his aid;
then Time struck back through him, having sprung.
وَلَوand if عادَreturned الزَّمانTime لَناfor us
وَلَو عادَ الزَّمان لَنا
لَعادَthen he would return بِهwith it أَخاas a brother حَدِباcaring
لَعادَ بِه أَخا حَدِبا
And if Time returned in our favor,
he would return with it, a caring brother.
