رُحنا إِلَيكَ وَقد راحَت بِك الراح
وَأَسرَعَتand acted swiftly فيكَon you أَوتارstrings وَأَقداحand goblets
وَأَسرَعَت فيكَ أَوتار وَأَقداح
We went to you when wine had already carried you away,
We went to you when comfort left with you
And strings and goblets had swiftly taken hold of you.
And memories quickened in you, strings and cups
قَدّمتَyou offered وَعداًa promise فَلَمّاthen when جِئتُI came أَطلُبهI seek it
قَدّمتَ وَعداً فَلَمّا جِئتُ أَطلُبه
أَجابَanswered بِالخُلفwith a breach of promise نِسرِينٌwild roses وَتُفّاحand apples
أَجابَ بِالخُلف نِسرِينٌ وَتُفّاح
You had offered a promise; then, when I came to claim it,
You made a promise but when I came for it
Wild roses and apples answered with a broken promise.
