Joy to the minister in a debt repaid,

through which Time's eye has found contentment,

and in the return of a vizierate brought to him,

like renewed closeness to a beloved after parting.

Abu Abd al-Ilah, the most eminent of capable men,

who gave freely of pure gold and silver.

And may that gladden Yaqub, his brother,

and their noble brother, Abu al-Husayn.

They are Time's two moons and its two bright browmarks,

freeing the realm from shame and blemish.

With sincere counsel and attentive care for it, they have placed

its interests in the place of the two eyes.

And corruption, though it had risen high,

could be brought low only by these two men's reform.

And may that gladden Abd Allah on his account,

his young man, for he is one of the two blessings.

A crescent moon the nights have not worn away,

nor has the passing of the two Farqad stars diminished him.

Lordship follows him, and he never falters,

and he resembles him as two delights of the eye resemble each other.

As when you set down a line from a book,

and left a ghayn undotted after an ayn.

A minister whose days are favorable, exalted

above his enemies, generous with both hands.

He holds wealth cheap, bestowing it in generosity,

and the ascent of generosity is difficult, not easy.

Time will repay him—with a long life

and the bestowal of leadership—every debt.

Robes of honor are now upon him, proud

of one lofty in soul, high at both summits.

With their blackness they dispelled the darkness of the nights,

as they make the blackness of both eyes shine.

With a girdle in which the jewels gleam,

as the two Shi'ra stars shone.

Slender straps from it are fastened

to a polished sword, fine at both edges,

like his judgment, which works through the nights

and the days as the two luminaries do.

May God raise all our masters high,

and let them endure as long as the two Farqad stars,

and clip away from them the claw of death,

with their wishes near and death far away,

and sovereignty over mankind, and a serene age

that casts a mighty pall upon their foes.

For how often they were reproached for excessive kindness,

yet they never heeded the two reproachers' rebukes.

From what I know, I utter words of truth,

far removed from falsehood and disgrace.

They have indeed protected the vizierate after it was dishonored,

and adorned it when it was without beauty,

    with judgment radiant for allies,

and stern toward the enemy, never yielding,

and with pens empowered to judge enemies,

like the judgment of sword and Rudayni spear.

And there the spear needs no straightening tool,

and the sword needs no smith's repair.

And letters flutter bearing what we desire,

through which both horizons are set right.

You see the decrees of fate ascending to him,

trailing along between wrapping and clay.

Your reward for setting a kingdom right

is the reward of those who witnessed Uhud or Hunayn.

Among the sons of free men, you have scaled a mountain

    whose peak overtops Dhu Ru'ayn.

And your Muhammad has raised you still higher,

and Yaqub, noble on both sides.

You inherited generosity and excellence from them both,

thus comes the offspring of two excellent men.

You have indeed set things right between my time

and me, generously, despite the foes.

I shall fulfill my obligations in praising you,

as the obligations owed to both parents are fulfilled.
