The east wind brushes past the dweller of Dhu al-Ghada,
The morning breeze blows gently over the abode of the beloved,
and its blowing rends my heart.
And my heart quivers that its blowing may stir.

Fresh from the beloved; for only
The love is still fresh, though the beloved is gone away.
where its beloved dwells does each soul's love abide.
The heart must love where its beloved may dwell.

From my soul, yearnings reach out toward you,
From my soul mounting aspirations rise towards you,
knowing that despair of you is their lot.
Intimations that despair of you will be its fate.

The pasture has grown desolate without Layla, and unrecognizable
The campsite of Layla has grown desolate and forlorn,
are Layla's dwellings—her tents and her sand dune.
Emptied are the tents and the hillocks of Layla.
وَزالَتand she departed زَوالَthe departure of الشَّمسthe sun عَنfrom مُستَقَرَّهاits resting place

And she departed, as the sun departs from its resting place;
As the sun declined from its zenith and disappeared,
so who will tell me in what land she has set?
Who will tell me in what land is its setting?

It is enough for the nights that they have cast you away
By the number of nights you have cast me away
into an abode of hatred, where evening finds you a stranger.
In an abode of misery, while you are a stranger to it.

Layla is free to frighten his heart
It is right that Layla should torment my heart,
with abandonment, and Layla's sins are forgiven.
With estrangement, and Layla's sins are forgivable.

I imagine you in Najd, and that is because
Your sojourn in Najd is because I gave respite
I thrill whenever the wind blows.
Whenever the breeze blew its blowing.

And some people said, 'Turn your soul's thoughts to another.'
Some people say: distract yourself with another.
But how, when Layla is its illness and its physician?
But how can I, when Layla is my sickness and my remedy?
