وَعَلّمتَنيand you taught me كَيفَhow الهَوىlove وَجهلتهand you were ignorant of it
وَعَلّمتَني كَيفَ الهَوى وَجهلته
وَعَلَّمكمand taught you صَبريmy patience عَلىwith ظُلمِكُمyour injustice ظُلمِيwronging me
وَعَلَّمكم صَبري عَلى ظُلمِكُم ظُلمِي
And you taught me the ways of love, though you did not know it.
You taught me passion though you were ignorant of it
And my patience with your injustice taught you to wrong me.
And my patience with your wrong taught you to wrong me
وَأَعلَمand I know ماwhat ليI have عِندَكُمwith you فَيَميلso it draws بيme
وَأَعلَم ما لي عِندَكُم فَيَميل بي
هَوايَmy passion إلىtoward جَهلignorance فَأُقصِرso I desist عَنfrom عِلمِknowledge
هَوايَ إلى جَهل فَأُقصِر عَن عِلمِ
And I know where I stand with you, yet I am drawn
I know well what I have from you that draws me to you
By my passion toward ignorance, so I turn away from knowledge.
My passion leads me to ignorance so I fall short of knowledge
