قُلت إِنَّ الذَّنبَ لي وَالذَ
ذَنبfault فعلa deed مِنamong فِعالِكyour deeds
ذَنب فعل مِن فِعالِك
You said the fault is mine, yet the
I said: "The sin is mine, though the deed
fault is one of your deeds.
Is one your actions did proceed.
لَكyours دونيnot mine الذَّنبُthe fault ماso long as كاis… (start of كان)
لَك دوني الذَّنبُ ما كا
نَ(completes كان, 'is') فُؤاديmy heart فيin حِبالِكyour snares
نَ فُؤادي في حِبالِك
The fault is yours, not mine, so long as
Apart from me, no sin remains
my heart is in your snares.
When once my heart was in your chains.
فَإِذاthen when رَدّis returned فُؤاديmy heart
فَإِذا رَدّ فُؤادي
فَلِيَthen mine الذَّنبُthe fault وَلاand not لِكyours
فَلِيَ الذَّنبُ وَلا لِك
Once my heart is returned,
And if my heart should turn again,
the fault is mine, not yours.
Then I am guilty, not you, men!

هَل فُؤادي وَهو في مُل

How often it has paid me a visit
How oft from you does it pretend
on your behalf, without it ever crossing your mind!
