Each one finds love of you sweet—
I, my reproacher, and the watchful guard.
As for me, I am wherever you wish:
estrangement, heartache, and suffering.
Oh, woe is me for all the hurt I suffer!
You have killed me, though you are the healer.
Thus you are to me an enemy—and beloved.
By God, how bitter my life is!
I have suffered, in secret and in the open.
My tears flowed until they became a sea,
while a blaze lodged deep within my ribs.
They melted in its heat, and still it melts them.
Against your eyes I have no means of escape,
nor any path to your favor.
O you who changes what he says,
I lament our separation though you are near—
a state as strange as you can see.
Neither my reproacher nor my watcher knew
that love is the least of my sins.
And you, O torment of hearts—
how many hearts complain to you,
while you turn away and do not answer!
She said, “Sumāk, you are fickle.”
I said, “It is your love that is unattainable.”
Then the sincere adviser recited, saying:
“Whoever betrays a beloved—God is his Reckoner;
God may punish him, or reward him.”
