لو أن عمرك أنفس عام كامل
ماnot كانwould be حقاًright أنto يقالbe called طويلlong
ما كان حقاً أن يقال طويل
If your lifespan were a whole year of utmost worth,
Though you live a hundred years more,
it would not be right to call it long.
That's not long, it's no overreach.
أكذاis it thus? يقودleads بكyou along الأسىsorrow نحوtoward الردىdeath
أكذا يقود بك الأسى نحو الردى
والعودand the lute عودa lute والشمولand the wine شمولwine
والعود عود والشمول شمول
Does sorrow lead you thus toward death,
Why let sorrow push you to ruin?
while the lute is a lute, and wine is wine?
Things cycle as they're meant to do.
لاdo not let يستبيكtake you captive الهمworry نفسكyour soul عنوةby force
لا يستبيك الهم نفسك عنوة
والكأسand the cup سيفa sword فيin يديكyour hands صقيلpolished
والكأس سيف في يديك صقيل
Let worry not take your soul captive by force,
Don't let worries make you their prey,
while the cup is a polished sword in your hands.
The cup's a sword, it's in your hands too.
بالعقلthrough reason تزدحمcrowd together الهمومcares علىupon الحشاthe heart
بالعقل تزدحم الهموم على الحشا
فالعقلso reason عنديin my view أنthat تزولvanish عقولminds
فالعقل عندي أن تزول عقول
Through reason, cares crowd upon the heart;
With reason, worries crowd your head,
so reason, to my mind, is for minds to vanish.
To me, reason is when they're through.
