سقى فسقى الله الزمان من أجله
بكأسينwith two cups منfrom لميائهhis dusky lips وعقارهand his wine
بكأسين من لميائه وعقاره
He gave me drink—may God water the age for his sake—
He quenched his thirst, so God quenched Time for him
With two cups, from his dusky lips and his wine.
With two cups of his water and medicine
وحياًand he greeted فحياso may He bless اللهGod دهراًan age أتىcame بهwith him
وحياً فحيا الله دهراً أتى به
بأطيبwith something more fragrant منthan ريحانهhis basil وعرارهand his fragrant wildflowers (ʿarār)
بأطيب من ريحانه وعراره
And he greeted me—may God bless an age that brought him—
And life, so God gave him a lifetime in which
With something more fragrant than his basil and his ʿarār blossoms.
The sweetest of his basil and thyme came to him
