أطَلتُI prolonged فيthrough الدهرtime تصعيديmy ascent وتصويبيand my descent
ودهرُand the lifetime of ذيone possessed of اللّبunderstanding مضمارُa racecourse التجاريبِtrials
Long have I ascended and descended through life;
and a discerning man's lifetime is a racecourse of trials.

أصابَattained غرَّةَthe choicest part of مأمولٍsomething hoped for ومرغوبand something desired
And many a fool who cannot even be guided to his own mouth
has gained the choicest of things hoped for and desired.

منfrom حيثُwhere يشفعُintercedes ليfor me قدindeed صارhas come to يغريincite others بيagainst me
And my bane is learning whose merit is plain:
where it should intercede for me, it now incites others against me.

Suffice it to observe that I do not compete for
a share of fortune; my experience and testing suffice.

And I sometimes see figures standing among people,
which I scrutinize between belief and disbelief.

When I filled my hand with them to test them,
I shook my palm free of creatures like king bees.

فماso not حَصَلتُI came علىupon عُربٍArabs ولاnor نوبNubians
Their faces are white, their hearts black;
so I gained neither Arabs nor Nubians.
الصدقُtruthfulness أولىmore fitting بمنfor one who يُبديreveals ضغينَتَهُhis rancor
لاdo not تجعلِmake الصدقَtruthfulness فيin نعتthe description of الأصاحيبcompanions
Truthfulness better suits one who reveals his rancor;
do not include truthfulness in your description of companions.
