تقضيdecree بتخليدهاthat it be immortalized هذيthese الأناشيدُsongs
Are you not, O company of kings, a people
Are you not, O angels, a group
whose immortality these songs decree?
That makes these poems eternal?
فإنso if نقصتمyou stint أناساًsome people منof نوالكمُyour bounty
فحقَّthen is due منكمfrom you لأهلِto the people of الشعرpoetry تزييدan increase
So if you stint some people of your bounty,
For if you lack some people from your gifts
then the poets are owed an increase from you.
Then it is right for the poets that you increase them
لَكُمfor you خُلِقناwe were created ولمand not نُخلَقwe were created لأنفسناfor ourselves
فإنّماfor only نحنwe تحميدٌpraise وتمجيدand glorification
For you we were created, and not for ourselves;
We were created for your sake, not for ourselves
for we are nothing but praise and glorification.
We are but praise and glorification
ياO صاحبpossessor of المجدِglory إنindeed المجدَglory سائمةٌa grazing beast
تضلُّstrays إنif لمnot يكنthere is بالشعرby poetry تقييدtethering
O possessor of glory, glory is a grazing beast
O owner of glory, glory is a thirsty she-camel
that strays unless it is tethered by poetry.
That goes astray unless tied down by poetry
خُذنيcall upon me بماfor whatever شئتَyou wish منof غرّاءَradiant شاردةٍfar-ranging

Demand of me whatever radiant, far-ranging poem you wish,
Take me, however you wish, with the confused wanderings
to which the deaf man listens, stricken at heart.
That the deaf listens to though useless
واعذرand excuse بتصيرهunclear; likely 'for his shortcomings' مَنone who لاnot يزالُceases لهfor him
فيin ساقةِthe rear guard of الرزقِlivelihood إرقالٌswift trotting وتوخيدand rapid striding
And excuse the shortcomings [uncertain reading] of one who forever
And excuse the one who still has
trots and strides swiftly in livelihood's rear guard.
In the watering of sustenance, binding and knotting
لاnot يُدركُobtains القوتَsustenance مماfrom what أنتyou واهبُهُbestowing it

He cannot obtain sustenance from what you bestow
He does not attain livelihood from what you grant
until the officials' harassment has dragged on.
Until stretched thin by the workers' oppression
وليسand there is not للشِّعرِfor poetry إلاَّexcept خاطرٌa mind يقظٌwakeful
يهزُّهُstirs it منكَfrom you ترفيهٌease وتأييدand support
And poetry has nothing but a wakeful mind,
Poetry has only an alert idea
stirred by the ease and support you provide.
That you invigorate and support
وماand not المدائحpanegyrics إلاexcept بالملوكthrough kings وهلand does
يبديreveals سناthe radiance of العقدِthe necklace إلاَّexcept النحرthe upper chest والجيدand the neck
And panegyrics are nothing without kings—and does
Eulogies are but for kings, and does
anything but the upper chest and neck reveal the necklace's radiance?
The old necklace reveal anything but pearls and fine gems?
