للناس في ذا تبائن عجب
Not everyone who sniffs catches a scent.
Not all who breathe the air discern
In this, there is wondrous disparity among people.
The subtle scents that fill the wind.
قومsome people لهمfor them فكرةa thought تجولroams بهمwith them
قوم لهم فكرة تجول بهم
بينamong المعانيthe meanings أولئكthose النجبthe noble ones
بين المعاني أولئك النجب
Some have a thought that carries them roaming
Some minds can wander through the truths
among meanings; those are the noble ones.
That lift the common from its rut.
وفرقةand a group فيat القشورthe husks قدalready وقفواthey halted
وفرقة في القشور قد وقفوا
وليسand not يدرونthey know لبthe kernel ماwhat طلبواthey sought
وليس يدرون لب ما طلبوا
And a group has halted at the husks,
While others stop at surfaces
and they do not know the kernel of what they sought.
And never grasp the core of things.
لاno غايةgoal تنجليbecomes clear لناظرهمto their gaze
لا غاية تنجلي لناظرهم
منهfrom it ولاnor ينقضيis fulfilled لهمfor them أربa desire
منه ولا ينقضي لهم أرب
No goal becomes clear to their gaze
No shininggoals allure their eyes.
from it, nor is any desire of theirs fulfilled.
No mysteries their visions plumb.
لاnot يتعدىtranscends امرؤa man جبلتهhis innate nature
لا يتعدى امرؤ جبلته
قدindeed قسمتhave been apportioned فيin الطبيعةnature الرتبthe ranks
قد قسمت في الطبيعة الرتب
No man transcends his innate nature;
None transcend their inborn traits;
the ranks have been apportioned in nature.
All natures show their destined ranks.
