وهنواand they congratulated بالصيامon fasting فقلتso I said مهلاًwait
وهنوا بالصيام فقلت مهلاً
فإنيfor I طولthroughout دهريmy life فيin صيامfasting
فإني طول دهري في صيام
They congratulated me on fasting, so I said, “Wait—
They urged me to fast, but I said, wait,
for I have been fasting all my life.
For my whole life has been fasting.
وهلand is there فطرa breaking of the fast لمنfor one who يمسيspends the evening ويضحيand spends the morning
وهل فطر لمن يمسي ويضحي
يؤملhopes for فضلthe surplus of أقواتِfood اللئامthe ignoble
يؤمل فضل أقواتِ اللئام
And is there any breaking of the fast for one who, evening and morning,
And does one break fast who wakes and sleeps
hopes for the ignoble’s leftover food?”
