O friend whom an age has bestowed on me,
O friend, time has benefited me
an age miserly and stingy with friends.
With scarce friends and stinginess
بينbetween شخصيmy person وبينand between شخصكyour person بعدٌdistance
بين شخصي وبين شخصك بعدٌ
غيرexcept أنthat الخيالthe imagination بالوصلwith reunion سمحgenerous
غير أن الخيال بالوصل سمح
Between my person and yours lies a distance,
Between me and you, there is distance
yet imagination is generous with reunion.
Yet imagination allows us to meet
إنماonly يمنعprevents التآلفharmony مناfrom us
إنما يمنع التآلف منا
أننيthat I am سكرsugar وأنكand that you are مُلحُsalt
أنني سكر وأنك مُلحُ
What alone prevents harmony between us
It's just that affinity between us is prevented
