فألحظهاso I regard them بطرفِwith the eye of المستريبِthe doubter
I see beautiful robes and brocade,
I see beautiful fabrics and brocades
So I regard them with a doubter's eye.
So I glance at them with a covetous eye
وأعرفand I know قصتيmy story وأرادand desired طرفيmy gaze
وفيand in قلبيmy heart أحرُّhotter منthan اللهيبِthe flame
And I know my story, and my gaze desired them,
And I know my story and what my eyes desire
And in my heart is heat hotter than flame.
Yet in my heart burns a flame more intense than fire
جنىcommitted a wrong نسبيmy lineage عليagainst me وصدand barred رزقيmy livelihood
وأثكلنيand bereaved me منof الدنياthis world نصيبيmy share
My lineage wronged me and barred my livelihood,
My lineage brought me shame and denied me sustenance
And left me bereft of my share of this world.
And my lot in life has left me bereaved
فواso, oh أسفاًsorrow علىfor كستيجgirdle قسa priest
وياand oh لهفاًanguish علىfor قوسbow الصليبthe cross
So, alas for a priest's girdle,
Oh what sorrow for my broken bow
And alas for the bow of the cross!
And what yearning for the bow of the cross
