توق وقيت السوء ما أنت صانع

توق وقيت السوء ما أنت صانع

My two friends, say to the caliph Ahmad:

Beware of what you are doing—may you be spared harm.

وزيرك هذا بين أمرين فيهما

وزيرك هذا بين أمرين فيهما

صنيعك ياخير البرية ضائع

صنيعك ياخير البرية ضائع

This vizier of yours stands between two alternatives, in both of which

your kindness, O best of creation, is wasted.

لئن كان حقا من سلالة حيدر

لئن كان حقا من سلالة حيدر

فهذا وزير في الخلافة طامع

فهذا وزير في الخلافة طامع

If he is truly of Haydar's lineage,

then here is a vizier who covets the caliphate;

وأن كان فيما يدعي غير صادق

وأن كان فيما يدعي غير صادق

فاضيع ما كانت لديه الصنائع

فاضيع ما كانت لديه الصنائع

and if he is not truthful in what he claims,

then favors are utterly wasted on him.
