I was enamored of the art of the catapult and firing it,

I was ordered to master the mangonel and its launching

To demolish fortresses and capture fortified outposts.

وعدت إلى نظم القريض لشقوتي

وعدت إلى نظم القريض لشقوتي

فلم أخل في الحالين من قصد حائط

فلم أخل في الحالين من قصد حائط

And, to my misfortune, I returned to composing verse;

Yet I returned to composing poetry in my misfortune

So in neither pursuit was I free of aiming at a wall.

And missed the target in both endeavors
