A sign to convey my greetings; so greet them!

Greet the good! Were it not for them, there would be no Muslims on earth.

But they are its full moons and stars.

A hearty welcome to the good ones, and greet them gladly!
Greet them elatedly, O excellent and perfect ones!

For each of them, a specific greeting
let whoever is nearest convey it and graciously oblige.
That will reach the nearest one to convey it and bestow.

'Your loving friend prays for you and sends his greetings.'
Your loving friend sends blessings and greetings!

As for those who blame me for loving and befriending them,

May God guide you from he who is most unjust!

Do you see my love for them as disgrace upon me and condemn?

Disgrace lies only in hating them and avoiding them;
Disgrace is but hating and avoiding them,
loving their enemies—that is disgrace and sin.
While loving their enemies—that is disgrace and sin.

love within them, where it never breaks off,
Love in them, where it does not wear out.

It is too weak to bear a shirt and pains.

To the madness of love; they do not twist nor stammer.

Death's threshing floors are above them; yet they covet.

You are, whether near or far O loved ones,
our beloved ones, whether absent or present.
Our loved ones! If you are absent or present.

Ask the wind's breezes how much they have carried
Ask the passing breezes how they have borne
of a passionate lover's love, whose longing cannot be concealed.
The love of a smitten one whose longing cannot be hidden.

The proof of this is that, as they blow,
For in their passing, they almost diffuse the passion—
they almost divulge his passion, if only they could speak.
If only they could speak!

When longing and craving intensified,
and the bonds of graceful patience almost snapped,
And the beautiful patience was about to snap,

I would console myself with meeting and its nearness,
I would appease myself with the prospect of meeting,
and delude my soul, though it remained apprehensive.
And delude myself, though it imagines.

within its sanctuary I have a spring dwelling and a camp.
Imagining encampment and dwelling.

And I recall a verse spoken by someone long departed,
And I recall a verse said by one who passed,
whose patience had deserted him, leaving him love-stricken:
Whose patience diverted him, so he was impassioned:
أسَائِلُI ask عَنكُمْabout you كلَّevery غادٍmorning traveler ورائحٍand evening traveler

'I ask every morning traveler and evening traveler about you,
"I ask every departing and arriving person about you,
and gesture toward your homelands and send greetings.'
And gesture towards your homelands, sending greetings."

How long can a yearning lover endure separation from his beloved,
How long can an ardent lover endure
while the fire of sorrow blazes in his heart?
When the fire of grief burns within him?
أمَاindeed وَالذِيby Him whose حَجَّmade pilgrimage الْمُحِبُّونَthe lovers بَيْتَهُHis House

Indeed, by Him whose House the lovers made pilgrimage to,
Indeed! By the One to Whom the lovers made pilgrimage,
answering His call at the place of consecration and entering ihram,
Circling with desire at the steep paths, robed in ihram.
وقدْand indeed كَشفُواthey uncovered تِلكَthose الرُّؤوسَheads توَاضُعًاin humility

having uncovered their heads in humility
They called Him, so they answered readily,
before the might of Him to whom faces bow and submit:
Out of satisfaction and love, and He is nearer than them.
يُهلُّونَthey proclaim the pilgrimage call بالبيداءِin the desert لبيكat Your service ربَّناour Lord

across the desert they cry, 'At Your service, our Lord!
You see them disheveled on the hilltops—
Yours is sovereignty and the praise that You know.'
Dusty, yet most content and blessed.

He called them, and they answered willingly and lovingly;
They left homeland and family out of desire,
when they called upon Him, He was nearer to them.
Undeterred by pleasures or luxury.

You see them upon weary mounts, their heads disheveled,
They travel from its corners and crevices—
and dust-covered, yet happier and more at ease therein.
Men and riders—surrendering to God.
وَقدْand indeed فارَقواthey left الأوطانَthe homelands والأهلَand the families رغبةًout of longing

ولمand not يُثنِهِمْturned them back لذَّاتُهُمْtheir pleasures والتَّنَعُّمُand comfortable living
They left their homelands and families out of longing;
When their eyes saw His House which
their pleasures and comfortable living did not turn them back.
The hearts of humankind yearn for, overcome with fervor,
يَسِيرونَthey journey مِنfrom أقطارِهاits regions وفِجاجِهاand its mountain passes

They journey from its far regions and mountain passes,
It was as if they had never endured hardship,
on foot and mounted, having submitted to God.
For their fatigue vanished from them.
ولمَّاand when رأتْsaw أبصارُهُمtheir eyes بيتَهُHis House الذيwhich

When their eyes beheld His House, toward which
My God! How many tears poured forth,
the hearts of humankind blaze with longing,
And more poured, following in succession.
كأنهمُas though they لمْnot يَنْصَبُواhad toiled قطُّever قبْلهُbefore it

لأنَّbecause شَقاهُمْtheir hardship قدindeed ترحَّلَdeparted عنْهُمُfrom them
it was as though they had never toiled before,
The lover's eye shone with its tears,
for their hardship had departed from them.
Seeing through the tears, recording.
فلِلَّهِso by God كمْhow many مِنof عَبْرةٍa tear مُهْرَاقةٍpoured out

By God, how many tears were poured out,
When the eye saw it, its darkness dispersed,
with another following in their wake, never preceding!
As did the gloom from the somber heart.
وَقدْand indeed شَرِقتْbecame flooded عينُthe eye المُحِبِّof the lover بدَمْعِهاwith its tears

فينظرُso he looks مِنfrom بينِbetween الدُّموعِthe tears ويُسْجِمُand pours tears forth
The lover's eye is flooded with its tears;
The sight, seeing its beauty, does not recognize it
he looks through them and pours them forth.
Until the eyes and longing return, greatest.
إذاwhen عَايَنَتْهُbeholds it العَيْنُthe eye زالَvanishes ظلامُهاits darkness

وزالَand vanishes عنfrom القلبِthe heart الكئيبِsorrowful التألُّمُthe pain
When the eye beholds it, its darkness disappears,
No wonder, since the Most Merciful annexed it to Himself;
and pain departs from the sorrowful heart.
So it is most revered.
ولاand not يَعْرِفُknows الطرْفُthe eye المُعايِنُbeholding حسْنَهُits beauty

The beholding eye does not fully know its beauty
He clothed it in the greatest garments of awe,
until the gaze returns, with longing still greater.
Upon which is embroidery, gloriously inscribed.
ولاand no عجبٌwonder مِنat ذاthis فحِينَfor when أضافهُHe attributed it
إلىto نفسِهِHimself الرحمنُthe Most Merciful ؛ فهوthen it المعظَّمُrevered
No wonder: when He attributed it
For this, all hearts love it,
to Himself, the Most Merciful made it revered.
Humbling in veneration and esteem.
كسَاهُHe clothed it منَwith الإجْلالِmajesty أعظمَthe greatest حُلةٍrobe

He clothed it in the greatest robe of majesty,
They set out to perform the rites, hopeful
bearing embroidery marked with beauty.
Of mercy and forgiveness from The Generous, Noble.
فمِنْso for أجلِthe sake of ذاthis كلُّall القلوبِthe hearts تُحِبُّهُlove it

وتَخْضَعُand bow إجْلالاin reverence لهُbefore it وتُعَظِّمُand honor
For this reason every heart loves it,
By God! Were their souls an acceptable sacrifice,
bows before it reverently, and honors it.
They would humbly offer themselves to the Command.
ورَاحُواand they proceeded إلىto التَّعْريفِthe standing at Arafat يَرْجُونَhoping for رحمةًmercy

ومغفرةand forgiveness مِمَّنfrom Him who يجودُgives generously ويُكرِمُand honors
They proceeded to the standing at Arafat, hoping for mercy
As they offered their necks to enemies in jihad,
and forgiveness from Him who gives generously and honors.
Until their blood flowed, undaunted.
فلِلهِso by God ذاكَthat الموقفُgathering الأعظمُgreatest الذيwhich

By God, that greatest gathering is
But they humbled themselves to the ritual,
like the gathering on Presentation Day—though that is greater.
A humiliation for slaves, branding them.

There the Almighty draws near—exalted is His majesty—
When they finished that burden
and boasts of them to His angels; He is most generous.
Which was obligatory, fulfilling their vows completely,
يقولُHe says عِبادِيMy servants قدْindeed أتونِيcame to Me مَحَبَّةًout of love

He says, 'My servants have come to Me out of love;
He called them to the Ancient House, to visit it;
I am kind to them, generous and merciful.
So welcome, O visitors, most generous and noble!
فأشْهِدُكُمْso I call you to witness أنِّيthat I غَفَرْتُforgave ذنُوبَهُمْtheir sins

I call you to witness that I have forgiven their sins,
By God! How splendid was their visit to it,
granted them what they hoped for, and bestow blessings.'
When those prizes were attained, fantastically!

Glad tidings to you, people of this gathering, where
By God! The favors there, the grace,
God forgives sins and shows mercy!
Kindness, benevolence, generosity, and mercy!

How many freed ones there have had their freedom completed,
They returned to their dwellings at Mina,
while another must work toward freedom; your Lord is most merciful.
Attaining felicity there, enjoying themselves.

Never among humankind has Satan been seen more enraged
They stayed a day, two days, three,
or more abased than there, vile as he is.
Then it was announced they should depart and they were notified.

That is because of something he saw that enraged him;
They set out to stone the Pillars in the evening—
he began throwing dust in fury and striking himself,
Glorifying God was their mantra; He was with them.

when he builds it and the Lord of the Throne demolishes?
To boast of them to His angels; He is Most Generous.

that is humility for servants, and their identifying mark.
So he hurriedly stroked the dust in rage and lament.

Why not reverse the bargain, if you are prudent?
For the glory of the One to whom faces bow in surrender!

So when He called them, it was as if He were nearer than them.

When violating the command, you plead divine decree,
Dusty, yet most content and blessed.

From the gloomy heart, relieved of distress.

degrading his soul; how could he be loved and honored?
He clothed it in the greatest garments of awe,
Slow toward obedience, faster toward obscenity
Upon which is embroidery, gloriously inscribed.

Were it pleasing to God than theirs, sincerely obedient!

Then it was announced they must depart and they were notified.

Whose fervent longing is not concealed.
Ah, would that I knew: shall I ever spend a night
For in its passing, it nearly diffuses the ecstasy—

Campment and dwelling.
Shall I lay my cheek upon the dust of their thresholds,
And I recall a verse said by one who passed,

submissively, so that they may soften and show mercy?
Whose patience diverted him until he was impassioned:
Shall I cast myself prostrate at their door,
'I ask all who depart and arrive about you,

Circling it robed, responding to the call in vigil!
Let anyone other than you be angry; there is no harm
They bared those heads humbly
