Your heart has become the spoil of wide, lovely eyes,

And your patience was lost among the riders and camels.

Your heart wandered after the departing litters, whereupon

The foremost tears rushed forth, between excuse and reproach.

On Sulayma’s day, you did not know whether you were bidding her farewell,

Or bidding farewell to a heart helpless in all its devices.

You followed them with glances, and behind those glances a liver

Kept pace with the caravan, between delay and haste.

They departed, while every heart held a wound and inward anguish,

And left you with a heart of your own gone mad.

And within the heart—though the heart is too small for him—

Dwells one languid-eyed and dark-lipped, a bewitcher of eyes:

Manifold in beauty; his eye, languid in its gaze,

Puts Harut to shame—or captivates Banu Thuʿal.

His body fashioned from a branch and from a moon,

His glance apportioned between coy allure and kohl.
