Woe to me from the angry one who turns away, when the
Woe to me from the angry one who turned away
tale-bearer conveyed to him a tale that was wholly false.
When a gossip told him pure lies

His temple-lock is cropped, his tress hangs loose;
With a slanted cheek and dangling forelock
from him I have two longings: one prolonged, one cut short.
My love for him is outstretched yet confined

كَأَنّني كأس خَمرٍ وهوَ مخْمُورُ
I greeted him; he turned aside, tightening his eyebrow's bow,
I surrendered while he knitted his brow
as though I were a cup of wine and he were hungover.
As though I'm a cup of wine and he is drunk

In him are varied charms that have bewitched me,
He has manifold charms I'm infatuated with
and everyone captivated by beauty is excused.
And every infatuated by beauty is excused

Slender is he; in my love for him, I never sought refuge with him
Sighing in his love, I gained nothing
without finding my passion triumphant.
Except my passion while he is victorious
