They sought to soften him, yet he persisted and turned away
They inclined towards him, so he persisted, obsessed
From a heart in which he had kindled love's anguish.
With passion for her that set his heart aflame

His eye slept, heedless of an eye
His eyes lay sleepless while hers slumbered
Over which tears commanded and forbade.
Tears streaming, though she tried to dissuade their flow

A moon—never has his countenance risen
A moon whose rising no other moon hailed
Without the full moon prostrating itself before it.
Except to bow before her splendor and glow

Flame-like in anger, water-like in contentment,
Quick to anger, yet pacified just as swift
So he is the beloved, however he turns.
The beloved, however she turned away in woe

Beauty etched upon his cheek
Beauty's outline etched on his cheek
A mole, with which Beauty made my enviers gloat.
A mark envied by those who bear her spite

It had been without his garden;
Once his garden felt her absence
Then, when it shone there, the garden reached perfection.
But now that she shone within, it was set right
