روحيmy soul الفِداءthe ransom لِمَنْfor the one who إذاwhen آلمتُهُI hurt him
عتْباًwith reproach تفضَّضturned silver خدُّهُhis cheek وتَذَهَّباand turned gold
My soul be ransom for him: when I wound him
My soul is a ransom for one who, if I hurt him
with reproach, his cheek turns silver and gold.
Reproachfully, his cheek melts and crumbles away.
وتوقَّدَتْand blazed فيin الرَّوْضِthe garden منfrom وَجنَاتِهِhis cheeks
نارُthe fire الحياءِmodesty يشبُّهاkindles it ماءُthe water الصِّبَاyouth
And in the garden, from his cheeks blazes
And in the garden the fires of shyness are kindled
the fire of modesty, which the water of youth kindles.
By the water of youth, flames fanned by the breeze’s play.
خَطَّتْtraced سَوالِفُهُhis sidelocks عَلَيهاupon them رُقيةًan incantation
لَمّاwhen تَثَعْبَنَbecame serpent-like صُدْغُهُhis temple-lock وتَعَقْرَبَاand became scorpion-like
His sidelocks trace a charm upon them
His conversation sketched gently over it
when his temple-lock turns serpent and scorpion.
Solace, when his cheek grew hot and his neck gave way.
عَذْبُsweet المُقَبَّلthe place kissed (his lips) إنْif تَحَدَّثَhe spoke أسكَرَتْintoxicated
أَلفاظُهُhis words وَإِذاand when تَنَفَّسَhe breathed أَطْرَباhe enraptured
Sweet are his lips; if he speaks, intoxicating are
Sweet when he speaks, his words intoxicate me;
his words; and when he breathes, he enraptures.
When he but breathes, rapture steals my wits away.
مُتَغَضِّبٌfeigning anger دَلّاًout of coquetry فَلَستُso I am not بمُدْرِكٍable to attain
مِنهُfrom him الرِّضاfavor إِلّاexcept بأَنْby the fact that أَتَغضَّباI feign anger
He feigns anger out of coquetry, so I cannot win
Angry, he is a charmer; I cannot win
his favor except by feigning anger myself.
His favor but by making him yet more angry.
