    Mahmud, who surpasses his forebears,

if lineage adds to the honor of the highborn.

A king: when his people's glorious deeds are recited,

musk goes unsold, and blossoms are put to shame.

Your sword's violence among them has overwhelmed the Franks,

so their cries rise on the ocean's shore.

One day, into Arqa's heart it brings you, bearing battle insignia—

dust stirred up along the banks of the Orontes.

and all murk has vanished through the purity of your justice.

    للَّه في خَطَراتِهِ أَسرارُ

    And a compassionate glance from you has wiped away wrongs;

God has secrets in his passing thoughts.

You are wrathful for Islam: its pillar has bowed,

so its light flees from what has beset it.

And you have severed every hand that assails another hand,

thus turning that assault into a bracelet.

No toll-collector on a Muslim's wares remained, nor

any agent of oppression, nor any tithe-collector.

to their ruin, for what they had done, by Qudar.

for which beacons were raised in the East and West!

by the least of which free men are enslaved.

one whose faith's knots a dinar has loosened?

How wondrous what hopes have gained from you,

and the strength of yours that veils have enfolded!

the purest earth on which showers have fallen.

that the stock from which you were drawn is pure gold.

and night, through long standing in prayer, is day.

So that mighty victory has its signs,

wherever you turn, and conquests have their portents.
