أَنكَرَتْdenied مُقْلَتُهُhis eye سَفْكَshedding دَميmy blood
أَنكَرَتْ مُقْلَتُهُ سَفْكَ دَمي
وَعَلاand rose upon وَجنَتَهُhis cheek فَاِعتَرَفَتْso it confessed
وَعَلا وَجنَتَهُ فَاِعتَرَفَتْ
His eye denied shedding my blood;
His eyelids denied shedding my blood
yet my blood rose upon his cheek, and his cheek confessed.
And his cheeks blushed, so he confessed
لاdo not تَخالواsuppose خَالَهُhis mole فيin خَدّهِhis cheek
لا تَخالوا خَالَهُ في خَدّهِ
قَطْرَةًa drop مِنfrom دَمِthe blood of جَفْنيmy eyelid نَطَفَتْtrickled
قَطْرَةً مِن دَمِ جَفْني نَطَفَتْ
Do not suppose the mole on his cheek
Do not think the mole on his cheek
a drop of blood that trickled from my eyelid.
Is a drop of blood from my eyelids that dripped
ذاكَthat مِنfrom نارِthe fire of فُؤاديmy heart جَذْوَةٌan ember
ذاكَ مِن نارِ فُؤادي جَذْوَةٌ
فيهِin it ساخَتْsank وَاِنْطَفَتْand went out ثُمَّthen طَفَتْfloated to the surface
فيهِ ساخَتْ وَاِنْطَفَتْ ثُمَّ طَفَتْ
That is an ember from the fire of my heart,
It is but an ember from my heart's fire
which sank into his cheek, went out, then floated to the surface.
