فَنائيmy perishing فيكin you أَعذَبُsweeter مِنthan بَقائيmy survival
وَدائيand my sickness مِنكَfrom you أَنْفَعُmore beneficial مِنthan دَوائيmy cure
My perishing in you is sweeter than my survival,
and my sickness from you does me more good than my cure.
وَذُلّيand my abasement فيin هَوانِthe humiliation of هَوَاكَloving you عِزٌّhonor
وإنْand even if طاحتْhave flown away عُهُودُكyour pledges فيin الهواءِthe air
And my abasement in the humiliation of loving you is honor,
even if your pledges have vanished into thin air.
بِنَفسيwith my life as ransom مَنhim who يُحَلّلُunties عَقْدthe knot of صَبْريmy patience
إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle ماسَhe sways فيin عُقَدthe knots of القباءِthe robe
My life be ransom for him who unties the knot of my patience
when he sways in his knotted robe,
وَمَنand him who يُوهيweakens قُوايَmy powers بِعَطفِwith the curve of صُدْغٍa temple-lock
كَماjust as اِنعَطفَcurved الظّلامُdarkness علىover الضّياءِlight
and for him who saps my strength with a curving temple-lock,
as darkness curves over light.
أَقولُI say وَقَدand already بَداhe appeared يَنهالُflowing down ليناًsoftly
كَماjust as اِرتجَّquivered اللِوىthe sand dune تَحتَbeneath اللِواءِthe banner
I say, as he appears, flowing softly,
as the sand dune quivers beneath the banner:
أَتِمْثالٌis he a statue? مِنَof الكافورِcamphor طابَتْwere sweet
مَراشِفُthe lips فيهof his mouth أمor تِمْثَالُa statue of ماءِwater
“Is he a statue of camphor, sweet
of lip, or a statue of water?”
فَقالَthen he said بَلِrather الهِلالُthe crescent moon فَقلتُso I said حَقّاًtruly
ولكنْand yet لِمwhy نَزَلْتَyou descended منfrom السَّماءِthe sky
He said, “Rather, the crescent moon.” I said, “Indeed—
but why have you descended from the sky?”
