    تمنَّوْا مَنُوناً وغرُّوا غُرُورا

    We saw the kings as they vied with you;

    They wished for death and were utterly deluded.

    A father, for your sake, would not let them attain it—

    He roars, making lions forget how to roar.

    And a grandfather who, when the day of contest grew earnest,

    Left his pursuer with stumbling fortune.

    You rain your rod upon whoever disobeys

    You, bringing with it a grim, dreadfully harsh day.

    This proud defiance has indeed clothed al-Sham

    In a soft, sumptuous garment of safety.

    You saved its last flickers of life, while hearts

    Thronged to find shelter within breasts.

    You raised up bodies that had been mere heaps,

    And built palaces where once there were graves.

    How many a wrathful outburst of yours for love

    Slays desire and castrates men!

    وإنْ ضحك العفْوُ عادت نُشُورا

    When battle frowns, it becomes death;

    And when pardon smiles, it turns to resurrection.

    تُبيدُ السّنينَ وتُفني العُصورا

    You attained perfection and were granted its very essence;

    You annihilate the years and consume the ages.

    And a Lord bestowed you upon us, having fashioned

    You as fire against unbelief and light for the faith.

    وَإِمّا عَبدْتَ فَعبداً شَكورا

    Whenever you are served, you are a generous master;

    And whenever you worship, a grateful servant.

    وَتَحتَ الحروبِ هِزَبْراً هَصورا

    Before the prayer niches, devout and chaste;

    And amid wars, a mighty, rending lion.

    Blessed is He who built these virtues

    Into a stately mountain beneath kingship's canopy,

    And at the crown's clasp joined together

    Your blazing might and sweet-flowing pardon.
