جَعلَmade القَطيعَةَestrangement سُلَّماًa ladder لِعتابِهِfor his reproach
متجرِّمٌa fault-finder جانٍa wrongdoer علىagainst أحبابهِhis loved ones
He made estrangement a ladder to his reproaches—
a fault-finder who wrongs his loved ones.
ماnot زالَceased يُضمِرُharbors غَدرَهُhis treachery مُتعَلّلاًmaking excuses
بوُشاتهthrough his slanderers مُتَسَتِّراًconcealing himself بكُذّابهِbehind his liars
He never ceased harboring his treachery, making excuses
through his slanderers, hiding behind his liars,
حتّىuntil تَحدَّثَspoke ناظِراهُhis two eyes فَحَلَّلاand they loosened
ماwhat كانَwas أَوثقَfirmest مِنamong عُرَىthe bonds of أَعتابهِhis thresholds
until his two eyes spoke and loosened
the firmest bonds of his thresholds.
وَاللَّهِby God لَوْلاwere it not for ماwhat يَقومُrises بِنَصرِهِin his defense
مِنfrom نارِthe fire of وَجنَتهِhis cheek وَماءِand the water of شَبابِهِhis youth
By God, were it not for what rises in his defense
from his cheek's fire and his youth's water,
لأَبَحْتُI would surely permit ماwhat حَظَرَforbade الهَوىlove مِنof هَجرِهِforsaking him
لِيَصحّso he might mend أوor حرَّمْتُI would forbid حِلَّthe lawfulness of رِضابهِhis sweet saliva
I would permit the forsaking of him that love forbade,
so he might mend, or declare his lawful lip-nectar forbidden.
وَلَكانَand it would be مِنof دينِthe code of المُروءَةِhonor تَركهُleaving him
فالصَّبْرfor patience أعْذَبُsweeter مِنthan أَليمِpainful عَذابِهِhis torment
And leaving him would follow the code of honor,
for patience is sweeter than his painful torment.
حَتَّامَhow long أُقْبِلُI approach وهوwhile he ثانٍturning away عِطْفَهُhis side
وَالحُبُّand love يَحمِلُنيcompels me عَلىto اِسْتِجذابِهِdrawing him close
How long shall I approach while he turns his side away,
and love compels me to draw him close?
وَأَقولُand I say غَرطنّunclear; perhaps 'he mistook' غَيَّthe error of وُشاتِهِhis slanderers
رشداًright guidance فأرجوso I hope أنthat يفيقhe regains his senses لِماconcerning what بهِails him
And I say: [perhaps he mistook] his slanderers' error
for right guidance; so I hope he comes to his senses about what ails him.
وَإِذاand behold تَغيّرهُhis change لِمَعنىًfor a reason باطِنٍhidden
لاnot خَوفَfear of عاتِبِهِone reproaching him ولاnor مغتابِهِone slandering him
Yet behold, his change comes from a hidden motive,
not fear of one reproaching him or slandering him.
ياO ظالِماًwrongdoer أَعطىgave مَواثِقَbinding pledges of عَهدِهِhis covenant
بِوفائِهِof his faithfulness وَالعُذرُwhile excuses مِلءُfill ثِيابِهِhis garments
O wrongdoer, who gave binding pledges of his covenant,
vowing faithfulness while excuses fill his garments!
زيَّنْتَyou adorned ليfor me وجْهَthe face of الغرورdeception بموعدٍwith a promise
كذِبٍfalse فواso, alas for ظَمَأيmy thirst لِلَمْعِfor the gleam of سرابِهِits mirage
You adorned deception's face for me with a promise
that was false—alas for my thirst for its mirage's gleam!
ونبذْتَنيand you cast me aside نَبْذَthe casting of الحَصَاةa pebble مُضَيِّعاًsquandering
ودّاًaffection بَخِلتI was miserly بِهِwith it علىtoward خُطّابِهِits suitors
And you cast me aside like a pebble, squandering
an affection I withheld from its suitors.
ماnot كانwas وصْلُكunion with you غيرَother than هَجْعَةِa brief sleep of ساهرٍa sleepless man
غَضِّtender الجفونِthe eyelids فريّعthen startled فيamid أَهيابِهِhis fears
Union with you was only a sleepless man's brief slumber,
with tender eyelids, then startled amid his fears.
آهاًalas لِهَذاfor this القَلبِheart كَيفَhow خدعْتَهُyou deceived it
مُتَصنِّعاًputting on an act فَسَكَنْتَand you dwelt سِرَّthe secret of جَوابِهِits reply
Alas for this heart—how you deceived it!
Putting on an act, you dwelt in the secret of its reply.
وَلِناظِرٍand for an eye كَتَبَتْwrote إِلَيكto you جُفونُهُits eyelids
خَبَراًa message فَماbut not أَحسنْتَyou did well ردّreturning حجابِهِits veil
And for an eye whose eyelids wrote to you
a message; you did not return its veil graciously.
هَذاthis هَواكَlove for you محكَّماًmade sovereign ماnot ضرَّهُharmed it
ماwhat قَطعsevered الحُسَّادُthe envious مِنof أَسبابِهِits bonds
This love for you reigns supreme; it was not harmed
by the bonds the envious severed.
وَمَكانُكَand your place المَأهولُinhabited مُحكٌمsecure لمnot يَحْلُلْhas dwelt بهin it
أَحدٌanyone سِواكَexcept you ولاnor أَقامَstayed بِبابِهِat its gate
And your inhabited abode is secure; none has dwelt within it
but you, nor has anyone stayed at its gate.
وأناand I الّذيthe one who جَرَّبْتُهُI tested it فوجدتُهُand I found it
ماءًwater تَقَرُّfinds peace النَّفْسُthe soul باِستِعذابِهِin savoring its sweetness
And I am the one who tested it and found it
water in whose sweetness the soul finds peace.
فَإِنِso if اِستَقمتَyou stay upright فأنتَthen you أَنتyourself وَإِنْand if تَزُغْyou stray
فالْبَغْيُthen wrongdoing مَصْرَعُهُits downfall علىupon أربابِهِits perpetrators
So if you stay upright, you are yourself; and if you stray,
then wrongdoing brings downfall upon its own perpetrators.
