Through your name, the faith has become lofty of banner,
Tomorrow, in your name, the faith became lofty
secure in its pillar, firm in its footing.
The pillar of support, firm of step
لِذلِكَfor that لُقِّبتyou were named نوراًa light لَهُfor it
وَقَدand already أَغطَشَdarkened الظُّلْمُinjustice فيهِwithin it الظُّلَمthe darknesses
For this you were named its light,
For that you were titled "Light for it"
when injustice had deepened the darkness within it.
And darkness had covered it, so it was pitch black
أَضاءَتshone بِعَدلِكَthrough your justice آفاقُهُits horizons

Its horizons shone through your justice,
Your justice illuminated its horizons
and the bonds of faith were loosened when it grew dark.
And the bonds of religion were loosened when it was ignited
وَلَوand if لَمnot تَمشِyou walked رَهواًat ease لِنَصْرِto aid الرُّهاal-Ruha

And had you not marched at ease to aid al-Ruha—
And if you had not walked hastily to champion the bewildered
and one like you attains his aim once he resolves—
And the likes of you would not have succeeded if he intended

and on a day at Suta you spread death
And one day at Sowcca you unfolded your doves
over the rocky heights of its bastion, and it collapsed.
On the ridge from its corner so it collapsed

And Busra and Sarkhad, had you not risen
And Bosra and Sergiopolis, if you had not rebelled
swiftly, would both have become Iram's companions.
Would have been next to Iram

نِdual ending of ‘Ghoutas’ فضَّundid الصّليبُthe Cross لَهُfor it ماwhat نَظَمit had arrayed
And since your army spread through the two Ghoutas,
And since your army raided the Ghotatain
the Cross undid for it all it had arrayed.
The cross unto it has not composed poems

And at Kafr Latha and Hab you untied
And at Kafr Latha you permitted
the prince's knots with keen white swords,
The untying of the pronce's knots with white hands

لُcompletion of ‘are drawn’ إِلّاexcept مُقَمقمةًshearing off لِلقِمَمat the head-tops
accustomed never to be drawn
Who is accustomed that she is not submitted
except to shear off the crowns of heads.
Unless forcibly to the summits
وَيَومَand on the day بَسَرْفُودat Sarfud جَرَّعْتَهُمyou made them swallow

And on the day at Sarfud you made them swallow
And the day of Baserfon you made them drink
bitter brine that choked them and annihilated them.
A bitter poison that choked them and were extinguished
وَفَوقَand above العُرَيْمَةِal-Urayma غَشّاهُمُengulfed them

And above al-Urayma they were engulfed
And above Uraymah your brave armies covered them
by your armies' fury—the flood of al-Arim.
The torrents of your armies, a flood of calamities
وَأَنتَand you بِكَلبِهِمwith their dog فيin الكبولthe fetters

And you—with their dog in fetters,
And you in their doghouse with the perversions
his sanctuary laid open, his sanctities debased.
Violator of sanctuaries, disgracer of holy sites
وَبارَتُهُمand their Bara أَذَّنَتproclaimed أَنَّهاthat it

And their Bara proclaimed that it
And their church announced that it
had annihilated them; let them bear reproach.
Renounced them, so let them bear with dispraise

They built it and raised it high, not knowing
They built it and exalted, but did not know
what the Pen had written of you on the Tablet,
What the pen had transcribed unto the tablet from you
وَأَنَّكَand that you خارِمٌone who breaches ماwhat أَحكَموهُthey made it firm
وَمِنand of دِينِناour faith راقِعٌone who patches ماwhat اِنْخَرَمwas torn
and that you would breach what they made firm,
And that you will destroy what they strengthened
and mend whatever was torn in our faith.
And elevate what had crumbled from our religion
فَتَرفَعُso you raise مِنfrom بَعدِafter خَفضٍabasement هُدىguidance

وَتَخفِضُand you lower مِنfrom بَعدِafter رَفعٍexaltation صَنَمan idol
So you raise guidance after it was brought low,
So guidance is raised after being brought down
and bring an idol low after it was raised high.
And idols are brought down after being raised
سَمَكتَyou raised المَدارِسَthe schools فَوقَabove النّجومthe stars
فَكَمso how many منْجمٍa mine تَحتَهاbeneath them قَدindeed نَجَمhas emerged
You raised the schools above the stars;
You established schools above the stars
and how many a mine has emerged beneath them!
So how many astrologers have appeared underneath them
وَعاشَand lived الحَنيفِيُّthe Hanafi وَالشافِعِيّand the Shafi‘i

And the Hanafi and the Shafi‘i came to life
And the Hanifi and Shafii lived
through the schools you built, though both were mouldering bones.
By what you affirmed from it while they were in disarray
وَإِنْand although لَمnot تَكُنyou are هاشِميَّHashimite الأُصولancestry

فَإنَّكَyet indeed you فَرعُan offshoot of الهِزَبْرِthe lion الهِشَمthe crushing one
And though you are not Hashimite by descent,
And if you were not Hashimi in origins
yet you are an offshoot of the crushing lion.
Then you are a branch of the glorious Hesham
وَمَنand who يَدَّعيclaims فيin العُلاglory ماwhat اِدَّعَيتyou have claimed

And who can claim in glory what you have claimed,
And whoever claims in supremacy what you have claimed
when you are the son of one who was mighty when he ruled?
While you are the son of one who was mighty when he arbitrated
وَأُقسِمُand I swear ماnot غابَvanished سَيفٌa sword سَقَتْwatered

And I swear: no sword has vanished that was watered
And I swear by that which the sword missed
at its roots by the spring of these virtues.
Its meadows have been watered by the eye of this mark
