صديقٌ قال لي لَمّا رَآني
وَقدand had صَلَّيتُI prayed زُهداًout of asceticism ثمَّthen صُمتُI fasted
وَقد صَلَّيتُ زُهداً ثمَّ صُمتُ
A friend said to me when he saw me—
A friend said when seeing me
And I had prayed out of asceticism, then fasted—
Having prayed ascetically then fallen silent
علىat يدِthe hand of أيّwhich شيختُبتَsheikh; you repented قُلsay ليto me
على يدِ أيّ شيختُبتَ قُل لي

فقلتُ على يد الإِفلاس تُبتُ
“Tell me, at the hands of which sheikh did you repent?”
"Tell me, at whose hand did you repent?"
So I said, “At the hands of bankruptcy I repented.”
I said, "At the hand of poverty I repented."
