مِلتِyou turned away عنّيfrom me لِماbecause of what حكاهhe recounted it العذولُthe reproacher
أيُّwhat غُصنbough معwith الصَباthe east wind لاnot يَميلُbends
You turned away from me because of what the reproacher recounted.
I grew weary of telling him what the censurers alleged,
What bough does not bend with the east wind?
"What branch sways not gently with the breeze?"
كلَّevery حينmoment تُصغيyou listen لماto what قالhe said هلّاwhy not
بعضَsome حينtime تُصغيyou listen إلىto ماwhat أَقولI say
At every moment you listen to what he said—why not
Always lending ear to whatever he says,
Sometimes listen to what I say?
Scarcely ever listening to my words.
هوit is حظّيmy lot أموتُI die وجداًof passion وشوقاًand longing
وَحبيبيand my beloved بِمُبغضيwith one who hates me مَشغولpreoccupied
It is my lot: I die of passion and longing,
Such is my lot! I die of love and longing
And my beloved is preoccupied with one who hates me.
While my beloved is busy with my foe.
أَناI عبدٌa slave وكلُّand all ماthat شِئتَyou wish تُعطىyou are given
فَالتَجَنّيthen, the unjust blame وَالعَتبُand the reproach لمwhy ذاthis يَطولlasts so long
I am a slave, and you are given all you wish;
I am a slave and whatever you desire is granted.
Why, then, do these unjust accusations and reproaches persist?
Why then complain and show resentment?
رُضتَyou tamed فيهin it نَفساًa soul عزيزاًgrievous عليهاto it
ذُلُّهاits humiliation والمُحِبُّand the lover عانٍa captive ذَليلabased
Therein you tamed a soul pained by
You have chosen for yourself a soul that holds you dear,
Its humiliation; the lover is a captive, abased.
Abasing it while the lover is abased and vile.
وَيقولand he says النَصيحُthe well-wisher أرسلsend إليهto him
بِخُضوعwith humility لعلّperhaps حالاًa state تحولchanges
And the well-wisher says, 'Send him word
And the adviser says, "Send him a message meekly,
With humility; perhaps the situation will change.'
Perhaps his attitude may change."
أناI أَرسلتI sent لِلحَبيبto the beloved ولكنand yet
ليتwould that شعريmy knowledge بماwith what يَعودreturns الرَسولthe messenger
I sent to the beloved, and yet—
I sent a message to my beloved, but alas-
Would that I knew what the messenger will bring back.
I wonder what the messenger will bring.
