يعيبblame الناسthe people كلهمall of them الزماناthe times
يعيب الناس كلهم الزمانا
وماand there is no لزمانناfor our times عيبfault سواناother than us
وما لزماننا عيب سوانا
All people blame the times,
yet our times have no fault but us.
نعيبwe blame زمانناour times والعيبand the fault فيناin us
نعيب زماننا والعيب فينا
ولوand if نطقspoke الزمانthe times اذنthen هجاناwould lampoon us
ولو نطق الزمان اذن هجانا
We blame our times, though the fault lies in us;
and if the times could speak, they would lampoon us.
ذئابwolves كلناall of us فىin زىthe garb of ناسpeople
ذئاب كلنا فى زى ناس
فسبحانso glory be to الذىthe One who فيهin it براناcreated us
فسبحان الذى فيه برانا
We are all wolves in human garb;
so glory be to Him who created us in that guise.
يعافis loath الذئبthe wolf يأكلto eat لحمthe flesh of ذئبa wolf
يعاف الذئب يأكل لحم ذئب
ويأكلand eats بعضناsome of us بعضاothers عياناin plain sight
ويأكل بعضنا بعضا عيانا
A wolf is loath to eat a wolf’s flesh,
yet we eat one another in plain sight.
