O you who seek a happy lot through learning,

in this age, you have adopted a fool's view.

انفاق علم فى زمان جهالة

ترجو ودهر عمى وسخف مطبق

To sell learning in a time of ignorance

is what you hope for—in an age of blindness and all-pervading folly.

كن ساعيا ومصافعا ومضارطا

تنل الرغائب فى الزمان وتنفق

تنل الرغائب فى الزمان وتنفق

Be a tale-bearer, trade slaps, and trade farts;

you will win what you desire in this age and be in demand.

أو ما رأيت ملوك عصرك أصبحوا

أو ما رأيت ملوك عصرك أصبحوا

يتجملون بكل قاض أحمق

يتجملون بكل قاض أحمق

And have you not seen how the kings of your age have come

to adorn themselves with every foolish judge?

لا تلق أشباه الحمير بحكمة

لا تلق أشباه الحمير بحكمة

موه عليهم ما قدرت ومخرق

موه عليهم ما قدرت ومخرق

Do not meet the likes of donkeys with wisdom;

deceive them as much as you can, and practise trickery.
