وماand not سرّgladdened قلبيmy heart منذsince شطتwent far away بكwith you النوىseparation
وما سرّ قلبي منذ شطت بك النوى
نعيمٌbliss ولاnor لهوٌdiversion ولاnor متصرفُa pursuit
نعيمٌ ولا لهوٌ ولا متصرفُ
And since separation carried you far away, my heart has not been gladdened
My heart held no secret since fate willed we part
by bliss, diversion, or any pursuit.
No joy or play or will to take the lead
ولاnor ذقتI tasted طعمthe taste of الماءthe water إلاexcept وجدتهI found it
ولا ذقت طعم الماء إلا وجدته
سوىother than ذلكthat الماءthe water الذيwhich كنتI used to أعرفI know
سوى ذلك الماء الذي كنت أعرف
Nor have I tasted water without finding it
I've tasted not the savor of the draught
different from that water I used to know.
Save for the draught I knew and used to heed
ولمand did not أشهدI experience اللذاتthe pleasures إلاexcept تكلفاًwith forced effort
ولم أشهد اللذات إلا تكلفاً
وأيand what سرورjoy يقتضيهbrings it about التكلفforced effort
وأي سرور يقتضيه التكلف
Nor have I experienced pleasures except by forcing myself—
No pleasures have I witnessed but pretense
and what joy can such forced effort bring?
What joy does pretense ever intercede?
