ألا يا سائراً في عقد عمرٍ
يقاسيenduring فيin السرىnight travel حزناًrugged ground وسهلاand level ground
يقاسي في السرى حزناً وسهلا
Ah, O traveler through a decade of life,
O you who travel the rosary of your life
Enduring rugged and level ground on your night journey:
Enduring sorrow in the dark of night
قطعتyou have crossed نقاthe dune of المشيبgray hair وجزتand you passed عنهbeyond it
قطعت نقا المشيب وجزت عنه
وماand not بعدbeyond النقاthe dune إلاexcept المصلىthe prayer ground
وما بعد النقا إلا المصلى
You have crossed the dune of gray hair and passed beyond it,
You have snipped away your gray hair
And beyond the dune lies only the prayer ground.
And after such shearing, naught remains but the mosque.
