O you whom I adore, who have tormented my soul,

be gentle with a tormented lover, lovesick at heart.

If a meeting with you eludes him, then he

is content to meet your returning dream-phantom.

I swear by my passion in love and my burning anguish,

and by my bewilderment, my yearning, and my burning:

Were I to say to myself, “Give me your soul,” I would not hesitate

to do as you commanded; if you doubt it, test me.

My lord, is there a tender turn of heart, that you may listen to

my tales, my long complaint, and my reproaches?

Once you would meet me with a smiling face,

and today you meet me with a frowning face.

    فعلام تهجرني إذا لم أذنب

    I had no fault against you but love;

why, then, do you forsake me when I have not sinned?

Tell me by what means I may give,

if you keep me away because I draw near.

And by the life of your face, a rising full moon,

and the beauty of your forelock, like deepest darkness,

and by the welling of your eye, before whose

perfect splendor reproachful eyes have bowed,

and the whiteness of your smiling mouth, pure and bright,

    sweet, delectable, pearly, with cool, white teeth;

and by your stature, like a branch: I have taken, because of

its perils, the most arduous ride in love—

were I not of a rank for whose sake I honor the

    old pledge, safeguarding my office,

I would have torn away my veil in loving you, and delighted in

casting off the bridle, while my reproacher persisted over you.

    وتقسمت فكري وعقلي قد سبي

    My patience has indeed betrayed me, and my resources have dwindled;

and my thoughts are scattered, and my reason has been taken captive.

And I have freely given my soul and my last breath,

and my status, my prestige, and my office,

until I feared that my reproachers would say,

“This old man has indeed yearned for that boy.”

So look upon me with mercy by which I may live,

and which relieves my heart of exhausting passion.
