فمنso who ليfor me بأنthat ألقىI meet الخيالthe apparition المسلماoffering greetings
The phantom refused to visit except in imagination.
Illusions never learn to be content except falsely,
Who, then, can let me meet the apparition that offers greetings?
So who can give me a submissive fantasy?

And I would have sought its guidance, had it been of use to me,
I used to seek it out if it brought benefit,
And asked my eyelids for rain, if it could quench my thirst.
And tears would pour down if anguish accumulated.

But a lying phantom and a grasping hope
But fanciful illusions and greediness,
Soothe a love-enslaved heart with wishes.
Attract a longing heart with unrealistic hopes.

O two companions of my secret counsel—love is burning anguish,
My friend, my confidant, love is suffering,
Whose complaint reveals the thoughts kept hidden.
Its complaints make concealed consciences speak out.

وظبيand the gazelle of النقاthe sand dune والبانand the bān tree منfrom اجرعthe sandy tract of الحمىthe protected pasture
Take for my heart a pledge from the east wind's breath,
Take from my heart a covenant from itself in youth,
And the dune's gazelle and the bān tree on the protected pasture's sandy tract.
And a promise from a fawn, scared from drinking at the watering hole.

فحبيfor my love مقيمabiding أقصرabated الشوقlonging أوor سماsoared
Ah, let longing do whatever it will;
Indeed, longing itself is the maker,
For my love abides, whether longing wanes or soars.
So my love remains, though longing comes and goes.

And forgetfulness does call to me, offering solace,
Solitude calls me to it under pretense,
But sorrows forbid me to advance.
While yearnings forbid me to progress.

Whose are these camp-remains, deserted save for unseen voices
For those whose abodes lie barren except for echoes
Echoing their song among the ruins?
That reverberate their ruins with chanting.

I recognized love's signs there, though they had grown unfamiliar;
I knew their markings to be those of love then denied them,
So I surged over their traces, reading the signs.
So I frowned at its signs while harboring hope.

And one possessed by longing revisits dwellings worn away,
He who longs grows accustomed to meadows as nomads,
And recognizes the traces of homes through imagination.
And recognizes the traces of dwellings in illusion.

It visited me by night, with darkness between me and it—
Night comes between me and it,
A flash that blazed at the edges of the mountain passes.
With a gleam at the edges of the dunes kindling.

It renewed the old bond for me, as though
I find the ancient covenant as if
It gestured, recalling past bonds, and made its meaning clear.
It had hinted to remember pacts so I understand.

بكيتI wept لهfor it خلفbehind الدجىthe darkness وتبسماand it smiled
I marveled at that fluttering one, whose breast trembled in fear;
I marvel at the fluttering bosom, anxious,
I wept for it behind the darkness, while it smiled.
I cry for it beyond the darkness and smile.

And all night I quenched its thirst with cups of my tears,
I stay up pouring it cups of my tears,
And all night, with my assailant, there was talk of the protected pasture.
And I stay up stabbing it with talk of my fever.

And I clasped its hand on behalf of a home's traces at Dhī ʿAṣā,
I shook its hand in the manner of one who has taken to the path
Where I wore the patterned robe of youth.
And so I wore the garb of youth, an emblem.

As I remember it, it brought gazelles near, or human beings,
Because of my covenant with it, deer approach
And made graceful maidens rise as stars upon its horizons.
And planets rise in its horizons, shining.

I yearn for it wherever passion has carried me,
I yearn for it wherever desire took me
And my saddle roamed the lands, up to Najd and down to Tihāmah.
And I call out my journey in the lands, and blame.
