وهفت بقلبي زفرة الوجد
The hand of longing struck a spark from my fire-stick,
My hand of yearning drank from my flask,
and a sigh of passion set my heart aflutter.
And my heart sighed a sigh of passion.

بالقرب فاستبدلت بالبعد
I cast aside my consolation, confident
I cast away my tranquility in confidence
of reunion, only to receive separation in exchange.
Of nearness, and replaced it with distance.

Many a union I had hoped for,
And perhaps I had hoped for a union,
only to receive painful rejection in its place.
But it was hindered by painful rejection.

إن الغرام أضاع من عهدي
I seek no pledge from patience;
Do not seek patience where it is absent,
indeed, passion has wasted some of my fidelity.
For passion has destroyed my loyalty.

The reprover chides—how harsh he is!
How violent is the one who turns away!
I say, 'He has strayed,' and seek my right course.
I say he is lost, so I seek my guidance.

Passion guides me to its paths
because I find solace in the little they bestow.
So that you make excuses for my weakness in guidance.

rest the mounts: the east wind bears news
Give rest to the riders, for in youth there is news
that makes the galloping, sleek-coated steeds unnecessary.
That suffices instead of supplies and poverty.
