Greet the familiar haunts that once greeted me,

With streaming tears that water them and leave me thirsty.

Indeed, those whose home and mine have grown far apart

Carried my heart away in their wake, leaving me behind.

I stood seeking the patience lost after their departure,

On their account, and questioning a ruin that will not speak to me.

    وكيف والفكر يدنيه ويقصيني

    I picture the dwelling out of longing, then kiss it;

But how, when thought brings it near and keeps me far away?

And with longing's plunder of every pearl from me,

My heart remains untrusted as its guardian.

    فالدمع وقف على أطلاله الجون

    My eyelids watered the dwelling's haunts after they left;

So my tears are an endowment for its darkened ruins.

The call of love would have kept the heart occupied,

If my heart were to call me toward solace [wording unclear].

Our beloved ones, is there anyone who remembers the days of union

Among you, and is there a breeze from you to revive me?

What have I to do with a phantom that does not revisit its visitor,

And with the breeze, itself ailing, that heals me?

O people of Najd! Najd and its inhabitants are nothing,

In beauty, but the Garden of Paradise and wide-eyed maidens.

Do you know that whenever mention of you passes,

I sway, as though wine were making me sway?

I yearn toward lightning from the reaches of your land,

With longing; but for you, it would not stir my yearning.

O faraway one, whom wishes bring close to my mind,

So that I even imagine him nearby, whispering to me.

Love for you made my heart forget all others; and no one

Other than you could ever, in any way, make me forget you.

Have the nights, I wonder, made you forget to remember me, O

You whose memory the days have never made me forget?

O palace from which good fortune has raised a sanctuary,

Whose structure time never assails with decay.

A lofty edifice before which the gaze is bewildered, entranced

By all that delights you in form and color.

Away with Kisra's vaulted hall! Your council hall,

Lofty as it is, is surely greater than those vaulted halls.

And leave Damascus and its abode aside; for this palace of yours

Is more pleasing to the heart than the gates of Jirun.

Who will tell, on my behalf, the companions who abandoned

[A loyal one?]—and their sanctuary was lost when they forsook me—

That I have come from the heights to take shelter in a sanctuary,

Whose haunts nearly brought me to life with glad tidings,

And that, as a traveler, I have not met after them

A fate to contend with, nor an adversary to contend with me?

Not like the nights that broke their pledge to me, when

I turned my gaze between fear and humiliation.

May my days be watered and cared for—those from which

My hands won a share without being cheated.

I seek among them a man of means who does not defer

His promise, and look to a generous man who does not distress me.

And take these rhyming verses from them, with wisdom folded within,

Like blossoms nestled among fragrant herbs.

They gleam as pearls if unveiled; and if recited,

They praise you with the breath of gardens.

    لولا سعودك ما كادت تواتين

    I labored with all my strength over every elusive verse among them;

But for your good fortune, they would scarcely have yielded to me.

What has divided the mind holds it back from them:

Every sorrow hidden in the folds of the breast.

But through your good fortune their fugitive verses yielded to me,

So I tamed some of them with embellishment and adornment.

May you remain all your days in safety and ease,

And may your reign endure in victory and secure power.
