The east wind blew upon us, and they embraced.

So I recalled your neck in the embrace, and my own.

And when dew gathers on their tops,

they bend their necks and slender forms.

And when they meet the wind, you see nothing among them

    but cheeks meeting cheeks.

As though ʿUdhra among them were showing us

the look of submission and the plight of the love-stricken.

Their crowns are dew, and around their necks

are necklaces and bead-strings strung from it.

So the east wind sprinkles me with it, as though it were

    rosewater needing no distillation.

As though a perfumer's caravan were among them,

and it stirs up fire in censers of aloeswood.

The dews were busy with them, until I imagined them

spreading dew upon them for the hunt.

And they cloaked themselves in flowers, so I thought they were

a weary carder's scattered tufts above me.

And I delighted in their flies; their meadows

were clothed like a frequented pasture.

It sang and made me hear it, then vanished; never did

my eye fall upon it amid the layered herbage.

As though the string of al-Mawsili and Maʿbad

were in its two hands, as it fashions every song.

It climbs to the herbage's leaves, as though

its breast were made of a newborn's locks.

As though it were a witness or an accountant,

absorbed in the finger-counting of its laborious reckoning.
