Nose-ringed, with a slender back,
Shrunken in melting fat
As though it had been carved down to the utmost;
As if sculpted and hewn
كأنّماas though آخرهاher rear نقطةٌa dot

As though her rear were a dot
As if the last dot
Fallen from the mufti’s pen.
Fell from the Mufti's pen

Fastened to the ground on four legs
Propped on all fours upon the ground
That resemble a child’s newly sprouting hair;
Like a child's first hair growth

وتقطعُand she passes الأيامَthe days بالصّمتِin silence
Worn out, she has no rest,
Beaten, unable to rest
And passes her days in silence.
Silently marking time's passage
