مرُّواthey passed كماjust as محبُوبيmy beloved فمالَthen he leaned تَعُجclamors
نحويtoward me ركابُهُمُtheir riding camels ولمand did not يتوقّفُواthey stop
They passed, as my beloved [did]; he leaned amid clamor [wording unclear].
Toward me were their mounts, yet they did not stop.
ورأيتُand I saw محبُوبيmy beloved فمالَthen he inclined بجيدهwith his neck
نحويtoward me كماjust as مالbent القضيبُthe bough الأهيفُslender
And I saw my beloved, and he inclined his neck
Toward me, as a slender bough bends.
حيرانَbewildered منfrom وَجلِfear البُكاءِweeping كأنّهُas though he were
نشوانُdrunk قدalready غَلبتhas prevailed عليهِover him القَرقَفُwine
Bewildered by the dread of weeping, as though he were
Drunk, overcome by wine.
فعصيتُso I defied إقداميmy boldness فماso I did not ودَّعتُهُI bade him farewell
إلاّexcept مُخالسةfurtively وعيريwhile my caravan ترسُفُtrudges slowly
So I resisted my boldness and bade him no farewell
Save furtively, while my caravan trudged along.
