كأنّas though نُؤاديmy heart (reading فؤادي) فيin يدِيthe two hands of خَفَقانهِits throbbing
كأنّ نُؤادي في يدِي خَفَقانهِ
فريسةُprey ليثٍa lion قدalready تلاشَتhas wasted away منfrom النّهبِthe ravaging
فريسةُ ليثٍ قد تلاشَت من النّهبِ
As though my heart, in the hands of its throbbing,
Were a lion’s prey, reduced to nothing by ravaging.
كأنّas though سراباًa mirage فيwithin ضلوعيmy ribs وجاحماًand a blazing fire
كأنّ سراباً في ضلوعي وجاحماً
فهذاso this one حكىmirrored شوقيmy longing وهذاand this one حكىmirrored قلبيmy heart
فهذا حكى شوقي وهذا حكى قلبي
As though a mirage and a blazing fire were within my ribs:
The one mirrored my longing, and the other mirrored my heart.
