I see that the wealthy, when they die,

have those watchtowers built of stone.

They insist on ostentation and pride

over the poor, even in their graves.

So if there is indulgence at their summits,

then justice is within them, in their depths.

I marvel at one who lavishes care on a building,

feeling secure from the vicissitudes of time.

Has he not seen what has been ruined by the

    ages—cities and palaces—

and peoples who passed away, [one after another],

and how their young followed after their elders?

By their father's life, if they saw them,

they would not distinguish the rich from the poor,

    nor distinguish slaves from masters,

    nor distinguish females from males,

nor one who used to wear a woolen garment

from the body in direct contact with silk.

When the earth devours this one and that,

what advantage, then, has the great over the lowly?
