ومُرنّةٍand a plaintive bird والدَّجنُand the overcast sky ينسجُweaves فوقهاabove her
بُردينtwo mantles منof طلٍdew ونوءٍand rain باكِweeping
And a plaintive bird, with the overcast sky weaving above her
two mantles of dew and weeping rain,

leaned upon her folded wing, and had only
made a twig of arak her couch.
وترنمتand she warbled لحنينtwo melodies قدalready حلتهماshe adorned them both
بِغناءِwith the singing of مُسمِعةٍa songstress وأنّةِand the moan of شاكِone who complains
And she warbled two melodies she had adorned
with a songstress's singing and a sufferer's moan.
فَفقدتُso I lost منfrom نَفسيmy soul لفرطِbecause of the excess of تلهُّفيmy anguish
نَفسthe breath of الحياةِlife وقلتُand I said منwho أبكاكِmade you weep
So, in my overwhelming anguish, I lost from my soul
the breath of life, and said, “Who made you weep?”
