فَإنَّهاfor they قدhave قُسِّمَتbeen divided لِسِتَّهinto six
الضَّربmultiplication ثمَّthen الجَمعaddition ثُمَّthen القِسمَهdivision
For they have been divided into six:
They are divided into six kinds
multiplication, then addition, then division;
Multiplication, addition, division
وَبَعدَهُand after it التَّضعيفُdoubling يَتلوfollows الطَّرحاsubtraction
والسّادِسُand the sixth التَّجذيرُroot extraction فيهاamong them أضحاhas become
and after it, doubling follows subtraction;
Followed by doubling, subtraction
and root extraction is the sixth among them.
And sixth, taking the root, is evident
فَإنso if أَرَدتَyou wish ضَربَmultiplication جَذرِthe root of العَدَدthe number
فيby مِثلِهِits like أوor غَيرِهِother than it أَوor عَدَدa number
If you wish to multiply the root of a number
If you want to multiply a root
by its like, another root, or a number,
By itself or another number
فَرَبِّعهُماthen square them both عَلَىin انفِرادِisolation
واضرِبهُماand multiply them both كالضَّربِas in multiplication للاعدادِof numbers
then square each of the two separately,
Square them individually
and multiply them as you multiply numbers.
And multiply as with numbers
وَجَذرُand the root of ماwhat يَخرُجُresults فَهوthen it is الخارِجthe product
وَمِنand from هُناhere تَبدوbecome clear لَكَto you المناهِجthe methods
And the root of what results is the product,
The root of the product is the result
and from here the methods become clear to you.
And from this, methodologies become clear
وَالجَمعُand addition فَاسمَعهُthen hear it كلاماًan account مُجمَلاconcise
أَنthat تَجمَعَyou add المرَبَّعَينthe two squares أَوَّلاfirst
As for addition, hear it in a concise account:
And addition, listen to it generally
first add the two squares,
Is that you first square the two
وَلتَضربنهُماand be sure to multiply them both كَماas تَقَدَّماpreviously stated
وَتَأخُذَand take الجّذرَthe root مِنَof الجميعِthe whole
and be sure to multiply them as explained before,
Then multiply them as mentioned before
and take the root of the whole.
And take the root of the total
فَذاكَso that وَجهُthe method of الجمعِaddition للجُذورfor roots
مِنَof الأصَمِّa surd أوor مِنَof المجذورa number with an exact root
That is the method for adding roots,
That is how to add roots
whether surd or exact.
Of integers or of surds
وَأَوجُهُand the methods of القِسمَةِdivision عِندِيin my account أَربَعَهfour
خُذهاtake them لَدَيكَwith you شَرحُهاtheir explanation مُنَوَّعَهvaried
I have four methods of division;
And for me the cases of division are four
take them to hand; their explanation has several forms.
Take them, their explanation is varied
فَقِسمَةُso division of الفَردِthe single term عَلىby المنفَرِدthe single term
أَنthat تَقسشمَyou divide التَّربيعَthe squared value قَسمَas in dividing العَدَدthe number
To divide a single term by another single term,
Dividing an odd number by itself
divide the squared values as you divide numbers.
Is dividing its square by the number
والجيمُand the letter jim أَيضاًalso لاnot يَزالُceases to be تَابِعاًappended
يُنبيindicates عَنِabout التَّجذيرroot extraction فيماin what رُبِّعاwas squared
The letter jim, too, remains appended,
Jim also always follows
indicating root extraction in what has been squared.
To indicate taking the root of what was squared
وَقسمَةُand division of الفَردِthe single term عَلَىby التركيبِthe compound expression
فَقِسthen apply by analogy لَهُto it وَجهاًa method مِنَamong الضُّروبِthe procedures
To divide a single term by a compound,
And dividing an odd number by a compound
apply to it a method among the procedures:
Divide it as one case of methods
أَنthat تَضرِبَyou multiply التركيبَthe compound expression فيby مُنفَصِلِهits subtractive counterpart
فإنso if غَداit becomes فَضلاًa difference فَفيthen by مُتَّصلِهits additive counterpart
multiply the compound by its subtractive counterpart;
That you multiply the compound by its singular
but if it is a difference, use its additive counterpart.
If there is a remainder, then in its annex
وَتَقسِمَand divide الفَردَthe single term عَلَىby مَاwhat قَدhas بداresulted
مِنfrom ضَربِكَyour multiplying المركَّبينthe two compounds أَبَداalways
And divide the single term by what has resulted
And divide the odd number by what results
from your multiplication of the two compounds, always.
From your multiplying the two compounds
ثُمَّthen اضرِبmultiply الخارجَthe quotient فيby المنفَصِلthe subtractive counterpart
إنif كانَit was مَفصولاًsubtractive أوor المتَّصِلthe additive counterpart
Then multiply the quotient by the subtractive counterpart,
Then multiply the quotient by the singular
if it was subtractive, or by the additive one.
If it's detached or annexed
فَذاكضso that ماwhat يخرُجُresults مِنfrom قِسمَتِهits division
سُبحانَglory to مَنHim who أَوضَحَmade clear مِنthrough حِكمَتِهHis wisdom
That is what results from its division.
That is what results from its division
Glory to Him who gave clarity through His wisdom.
Glory to the One who clarified His wisdom
وَقسمَةُand division of المركَّبِthe compound المعلُومِknown
عَلىby المفرَدِthe single term مِنَof المقسومِthe dividend
To divide the known compound
And dividing a known compound
by a single term of the dividend,
By a singular divisor
أَنthat تَقسِمَyou divide الأفرادَthe individual terms مِمّاof what رُكِّباwas compounded
فَرداًone term عَلىby فَردٍone term كَماas قَدhave رَكِّباbeen compounded
divide the individual terms of which it is composed,
Is dividing its singular components
term by term, just as they were compounded,
One by one as they were compounded
كَماas الَّذيwhat قَدalready قُلتهI said it فيabout القِسمَهdivision
فَاسمَعso listen هَداكmay He guide you اللهGod رَبُّLord of الحِكمَهwisdom
as in what I have already said about division.
As I already said about division
So listen—may God, Lord of wisdom, guide you.
Listen, God guides to wisdom
وَإنand if تُرشدyou are guided أَنto تَقسِمَyou divide المُرَكَّباthe compound
عَلىby مِثالِthe like of غَيرِهِother than it قَدhas رُكِّباbeen compounded
And if you are guided to divide a compound
And if you want to divide a compound
by another similarly compounded expression,
By another like it, compounded
فَلتَقسِمَنَّthen be sure to divide مُفرَداتthe individual terms of الأعلىthe upper expression
فَرداًone term فَفَرداًthen one term كَيso that توفىyou fulfill الأصلاthe original quantity
then be sure to divide the terms of the upper expression,
Divide the top singulars
one by one, to account for the original quantity,
One by one to fulfill the principle
علىby مُركِّباتشthe compound terms of شَطرthe part of الثانيthe second
فيكمُلُthen is completed الكلُّthe whole بِالامتِحانِby verification
by the compounds of the second part;
By the bottom compounds' halves
then the whole is completed by verification.
The total is complete with testing
وشَرطُand the condition of مَاwhat تُرِيدُyou seek مِنof صِحَّتِهاits correctness
أَنthat تَضرِبَyou multiply الخارِجَthe quotient منfrom قسمَتِهاits division
And the condition for the correctness you seek
The condition for its validity
is to multiply the quotient of that division
Is multiplying the quotient from its division
فيماby what عَلَيهِby it قَدhad قَسَمتَyou divided أوَّلاfirst
يَخرُجwill result ماwhat قَسَمتَهُyou divided it مُكَمَّلاcomplete
by what you originally divided by:
By what you originally divided
what you divided will result in full.
The complete result emerges
والجذرُand the root إنif أَرَدتَyou wish أَنto تُضعِفَهُyou double it
فَضَربُهُthen multiplying it فيby اثنينtwo يُبديshows ضِعفَهُits double
And if you wish to double a root,
And if you want to double a root
multiplying it by two gives its double.
Multiplying by two reveals its double
وَإنand if أَرَدتَyou wish ضِعفَهُits multiple مِثلequal to عَدَدa number
فَاضرِبهُthen multiply it فيby عِدَّتِهِits count عَلىwith سَدَدcorrectness
And if you wish to multiply it a certain number of times,
And if you want its double as a number
multiply it by that count, correctly.
Multiply it by its count, properly
يَخرُجُresults مَاwhat أَرَدتَyou wished مِنof تَضعِيفِmultiplying
مِنfrom غَيرother than ماany شَكٍّdoubt ولاand no تحريفِdistortion
What you wanted from multiplying will result,
The desired doubling emerges
without any doubt or distortion.
Without doubt or distortion
والفَضلُand the excess مِنfrom تَربيعكَyour squaring الجَذرَينِthe two roots
عَلىover الَّذِيwhat يَبدوresults مِنfrom الاثنينthe two
And the excess from your squaring the two roots
And the remainder from squaring your two roots
over what results from the two
Over what appears from the two
فيin الضَّربِmultiplication إِنif أَرَدتَyou wish جَذرَthe root of الباقيthe remainder
فَرَبِّعِthen square المطلوبَthe sought quantity باستحقاقِas required
in multiplication—if you wish the root of the remainder,
In multiplication, if you want the root of the remainder
then square the sought quantity as required.
Square the desired, as is fitting
وَمِثلُand like هذاthis طَرحكyour subtraction of الجُذوراthe roots
فَبِالآلهso in God ثِقtrust وكُنand be شَكورَاthankful
And your subtraction of roots is like this;
The same for subtracting roots
so trust in God and be thankful.
So trust the device and be grateful
وَلتَرسِمand mark التَّجذيرَroot extraction فيin النَّوعَينthe two kinds
خَطّاًa line مُفرَّداًsingle وفيand in نَوعَينtwo kinds
And mark root extraction in the two kinds
And represent taking the root in two ways
with a single line; and in two kinds,
With a single line and in two ways
وَلتَجعَلand place الجيمَthe letter jim عَلىabove المنفَرِدthe single term
فَذاكso that جَذرُهُits root بِغَيرwithout فَنَدerror
place the letter jim above the single term;
And put Jim on what is singular
that is its root, without error.
That is its root without difficulty
هَذاthis اِصطِلاحٌa convention فيin العَمَلcalculation

وَجَذرُand the root of ماwhat رُكِّبwas compounded مِنfrom خَطَّينِtwo lines
فاختَلَفاso they differ بِسَببِbecause of الاسمَينِthe two terms
And for the root of what is composed of two lines,
And the root of what is compounded of two lines
which differ because of the two terms,
Which differ due to the two names
فَرَبِّعthen square الأنصافَthe halves مِنof كِلَيهماboth of them
وانقِصand subtract مِنَfrom الأكبَرِthe larger أَصغَرَيهماthe smaller of them both
square the halves of both,
Square the halves of both
and subtract the smaller of the two from the larger.
And subtract the smaller from the larger
وماand what بَقِيَremains فاكسِهِthen clothe it with لَفظَthe word الجَذرِroot
وَأنقِصهُand subtract it مِنfrom نِصفِhalf of عَظيمِthe greater القَدرِmagnitude
And clothe what remains in the word 'root',
And what remains, multiply by the root term
and subtract it from half the greater quantity.
And subtract it from the larger half
وَفَضلُand the remainder of ماwhat يَبقىremains لتأخُذyou should take جَذرَهits root
واجعَلهُand keep it مَحفوظاin reserve واكتمand conceal سرَّهits secret
And take the root of the remainder,
The remainder, take its root
keep it in reserve, and conceal its secret.
And keep it hidden, conceal its secret
واحمِلand add عَلَىto التَّنصيفthe half-value ماwhat نَقَصتاyou subtracted
ثُمَّthen خُذtake الجَذرَthe root إذاwhen أَضَفتاyou have added
And add to the half what you subtracted,
And carry to halving what was subtracted
then take the root once you have added it.
Then take the root when they are added
وَجَذرُكَand your root المحفوظُreserved فيin المنفَصِلِthe subtractive expression
فَافصِلهُthen subtract it مِنfrom نِصفِhalf of العَظيمِthe larger الأطوَلِthe longer
And your reserved root, in the subtractive case,
And your root kept in the singular
subtract it from half the larger, longer line.
Separate it from the larger half's half
فَذاكَso that جَذرُthe root of خَطِّكَyour line المرَكَّبcompound
وهوand it ذوhaving الاسمَينtwo terms فافهمso understand تُصِبyou will be right
That is the root of your compound line,
That is the root of your compound line
and it has two terms—understand, and you will be right.
The one with two names, so understand precisely
والجَذرُand the root إنif ضَرَبتَهyou multiply it فِيby مِثلِهِits like
يَخرُجresults ماwhat جَذَّرتَهُyou took its root بِكُلِّهin its entirety
And if you multiply a root by its like,
And if you multiply a root by its like
the whole quantity whose root you took will result.
What you rooted entirely emerges
فَهكَذاso thus حَدِّثspeak عَنِabout الجُذورِthe roots

This is how to speak of roots
in the meter of half-line rajaz.
In recurring rajaz meter
