وَلَمَّاand when أَتَاناcame to us والدَّيَارُwhile the homes بَعيِدَةٌdistant
كتَابٌa letter بِأَنْفَاسِwith the breaths الوَدادِaffection تَضَوعاexuded fragrance
And when, with our homes far apart, there came to us
When it reached me, though home was far,
a letter fragrant with the breaths of affection,
A letter with the breath of love sighing,
أَرَقُّmore delicate مِنَthan السلْسَالِlimpid water لُطْفاًin grace كَأَنَمَّاas though
تَأَلَّفَwas formed مِنْfrom روحthe spirit الصَّبَاthe east wind وَتَجَّمعاand came together
more delicate in its grace than limpid water, as though
More gentle than a chain it was, as though
it had been formed and gathered from the spirit of the east wind,
It was made of the soul of youth assembling.
شَفَىquenched غُلَّةَburning thirst الصَّاديthe parched one وَسَكَّنَand soothed لَوْعَةًan anguish
تَكَادُalmost لَهَاbecause of it الأَكْبَادُthe livers أنْto تَتَصَدَّعاsplit asunder
it quenched the parched one's burning thirst and soothed an anguish
It healed the burning of my torment, stilled the anguish,
that nearly made livers split asunder.
Nearly making my liver split asunder.
تَنَافَسَvied فيهِfor it نَاظرٌan eye وأَنَامِلُand fingertips
وَأَخْفَيْنَand they hid عَمّاfrom what فِيْهِwas in it لُبّاًa mind وَمَسْمَعاand an ear
An eye and fingertips vied for it,
In it vied a beholder and fingers,
and kept mind and ear unaware of what it held.
And a prudent heart and hearing concealed.
فَقَبَّلْتُهُso I kissed it ألْفَاًa thousand times وَألْفَاًand a thousand times كَرَامَةًin homage
وَلْمَand did not أَرضَI accept إِجْلالاًout of reverence لَهُfor it الرَّأسَthe head مَوْضِعاas a resting place
So I kissed it a thousand times and a thousand more, in homage,
I kissed it a thousand thousand times with deference,
and, in reverence for it, deemed my head no fit resting place.
And did not deem it right to put my head on it.
وَنِلْتُand I gained مِنَfrom الأيّامِthe days مَاwhat كُنْتُI was راجيِاًhoping for
وُقُلْتُand I said لِدَهْريto my fate: كيفَhow ماever شِئتَyou wish فَاصنْعَاthen act
And I gained from the days what I had hoped for,
And I got from the days what I had hoped for,
and said to my fate: "Do whatever you will."
And said to my fate: “However you wish, so proceed!”
