وإني لمهد عن حنين مبرح

And indeed, out of agonizing longing, I offer

Though I do pine and yearn incessantly

to you, whether the dwelling is far or near,

For you, nearer or farther though you be,

وإن كانت الأشواق تزداد كلما

وإن كانت الأشواق تزداد كلما

تناقص بعد الدار واقترب المغنى

تناقص بعد الدار واقترب المغنى

though yearnings grow whenever

My longing seems to grow immensely

the distance to the dwelling lessens and the abode draws near,

As the distance to your abode diminishes and the return draws nigh

سلاماً كنشر الروض باكره الحيا

سلاماً كنشر الروض باكره الحيا

وهبت عليه نسمة السحر الأعلى

وهبت عليه نسمة السحر الأعلى

a greeting like the fragrance of a garden visited at dawn by rain,

Greetings like the fragrance of the meadows at dawn

and over which an early predawn breeze blew.

When the morning breeze wafts gently by

فجاء بمسكي الهوا متحلياً

فجاء بمسكي الهوا متحلياً

ببعض سجايا ذلك المجلس الأسمى

ببعض سجايا ذلك المجلس الأسمى

So it came with musk-scented air, adorned

Bringing to me the sweet musk of love

with some of the virtues of that most exalted assembly.

And traces of that sublime gathering on high
