My two friends, turn aside and wait for me; perhaps I may

Question a dwelling's trace, effaced and crumbled,

On sandy ground in Dhat al-Hija; I could not recognize it

After a little inward reflection, save by conjecture.

The winds had ravaged it, until you might almost

Take its remnants for a finely ornamented book.

They left nothing of it but blackened hearthstones standing,

And gray ash, darkened by the long passage of time.

I halted my mount there at the start of day,

Questioning the ruins, but they were too mute to speak.

    وَما ذِكرُ ما أَعيى عَليكَ وأَعجَما

    I questioned them, but they were too mute to answer me;

What use recalling what baffles you and remains mute?

There I once knew Layla and Salma, and often

I lived a captive to fair women, enslaved by love.

On nights when we reveled in youth, avoiding

Watchful eyes and never divulging our secret talk.

Yet we never engaged in evil, nor committed

Anything shameful, nor undertook a burdensome deed.

May God, my Lord, water with rain neither scant nor stinted

Their dwellings—He who waters the clouds—and keep them safe.

O Amila, why this foul abuse you hurl

From the Ghawr, with rhymes woven as warp and weft?

Little son of al-Riqaʿ, why does your speech soar,

When you, of all men, had most cause not to speak?

I knew you as a slave, of no true tribal stock,

Cut off from glory, your forearms severed, handless.

Were you anything but a truffle on a flat, open plain,

And a castoff among the tribes, abandoned?

You shelter with a people not your own, and claim kinship

With them, yet find no shelter from humiliation.

Enemies and war have left no ear

Upon your head that is not abased and cropped.

You do not shield a neighbor among you with a covenant

That protects him; nor is all your blood worth one man's blood.

By my life, on the day of Ubda you were laid low

By a youth who guarded honor, bearing his battle-mark.

A youth who led armies against the foes,

Brave: when horsemen feared, he advanced.

I swear you shed no blood after him,

Nor before him, in bygone ages, even a cupping-glassful.

    وَكانَت عليكمُ بَعدُ وقعةُ أَشأما

    You met him only when he was off guard;

And afterward, a more ill-omened battle fell upon you.

We seized you on the day of al-Majarr, and you became

Plunder and captives, divided among us.

We attacked you at dawn—our horses shaggy and grim—

With Busra's broad blades and straightened spear-shafts.

What barred you from boasting afterward was that we

Made you drink intensely bitter sap and colocynth.

And we gave the Yazani spears a morning draught of your

Blood, then quenched the bone-cleaving blades.

And you went off by our camp, beside the camels' forelegs,

Complaining of tightly fastened, hair-on rawhide bonds.

    Lowly camel-tenders drive your women,

Having left among them wailing and mourning.

They wail over your slain at a battlefield

Where we left shattered heads crying out.

A paltry little tribe, grown weak, its slaves few,

And abased—you never brought home booty.

    فأيقن وَما أَيقَنتَ حَتّى تَفهَّما

    You are of no true stock, that you might hope for aid;

So be certain; you gain no certainty until you understand.

Then you will know you spring from no tribal stock,

And that yours is a shriveled, severed teat.

You are neither of Kalb nor Bahra—declare your lineage!

Nor al-Yaqin; so sit down, son of a vile sucker, abased.

And squat as your father squatted on his arse,

Short of reach and downtrodden as he was.
